Bionic Enterprises will utilise existing, custom and next-generation components including electrodes, connectors, stimulator/recorder systems, surgical equipment and software. This technology, coupled with Australia’s world-class capabilities in medical bionics R&D, will enable the delivery of Bionic Enterprises product portfolio.
Specialist Devices in Development
An improved diagnostic system and smart device for epilepsy.
Two products will be developed for the 30% (approx.) of epilepsy sufferers who are drug-resistant. The first product, which will shortly commence clinical trials, is an ambulatory diagnostic device for clinical use in hospitals where patients are being evaluated for resective surgery. The second product is a fully implantable, closed-loop device for the prediction, detection and suppression of epileptic seizures.
An integrated system for improved diagnosis of epilepsy
Diagnostic epilepsy device for hospital use. › Information from MRI and CT scans provides an illustration of the location of implanted electrodes on the patients brain surface (black dots)....
Implantable epilepsy device for longer-term personal use.
A ‘smart’ customised, closed-loop device for the prediction, detection and suppression of seizures.
Deep Brain Stimulation
Movement & Psychiatric disorders
Bionic Enterprises aims to develop advanced DBS systems for intractable movement disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease, Essential Tremor and certain psychiatric disorders, such as Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). These devices will offer technical, clinical and cost advantages over existing devices.
The application of DBS to treat certain psychiatric disorders is rapidly expanding. OCD, for example, is currently poorly treated with conventional therapies. Bionic Enterprises will develop a device for these patients with stimulation parameters and other features superior to currently available devices.
